My favorite musical acts of all time are the Smiths, the Rolling Stones, and Fiona Apple. In no order — they’re all #1 to me. This shows my age, I know, but I like my age, so I don’t care. It also shows my race, but there’s not much I can do about that at this point.
I just rewatched this old Fiona Apple video from 1997 tonight, for her first single, made when she was 18 or 19. She wrote the song when she was 17. She got a lot of shit for being really skinny in this video (from Courtney Love, among others, who dissed Apple with fake concern; Apple’s response was basically “I’m a teenage girl in America — of course I’ve had an eating disorder. I don’t need your help, Courtney Love”). She also got shit for being a teenager with a sexuality. (But she was a teenager — of course she had a sexuality.) And, like Lana Del Rey, she got shit for daring to make music as a very young, conventionally attractive female human being. Anyway, if you’re not familiar with Apple’s music, you are so lucky right now, because you get to gorge on her genius anew.
